Stink-a-boo
Smoke prevention without pointing fingers
Research showed that the small, rural town of Vingåker in central Sweden, had the highest percentage of smokers in Södermanland county. Södermanland health authority approached us with a request for a film that could act as a conversation starter at BVC (children's health care center). The film needed to be universally understood, without any dialogue and without any blunt shaming or blaming of the smoker.
I came up with an idea of this (over) friendly smoke cloud that wants to be everyone's best friend. Especially cute newborns.
The end result exceeded everyone's expectations.
Stink-a-boo was shown in Vingåker, and almost immediately added to the toolbox in the rest of Södermanland's health care system. The film got picked up by the national anti-smoking organization and later on even WHO promoted the film on their website as a good example of non-smoking marketing.
The film has been screened at festivals all over the world. And most importantly the newborns in Vingåker are less exposed to secondhand smoke now.
Character design
Some character design sketches leading up to the production.
Location & Research
With the very specific target group we were asked to reach, it felt natural to give the film a strong connection to reality. By having the settings in Vingåker. Here’s part of the research we did to find the location.
The mansion in the background is where people have their Sunday stroll. And in one shot, down to the left corner, can the city´s biggest tourist attraction be seen - Vingåker Factory Outlet.
